Pacemaker testing/ programming for children
A pacemaker check is a procedure during which a doctor evaluates the functioning of an implanted heart device and adjusts its settings if necessary. Regular check-ups help ensure that the pacemaker is working safely and effectively, ensuring your child's heart health in the long term.
What is it?
A pacemaker (ECG) is a small, very smart medical device that helps the heart beat in a correct rhythm. It is placed under the child's skin – in the abdomen for younger children, in the shoulder for older children, so that the device does not interfere with movement and is safely protected.
Thin wires, or electrodes, extend from the pacemaker and are connected to the heart, helping it maintain a rhythm when the heart is beating too slowly (a pacemaker), or recognizing and preventing a heart beating too fast or irregularly (a defibrillator). The type of device inserted depends on the type of heart rhythm disorder present, and sometimes combines both functions.
ECG testing and programming is a painless procedure during which the doctor checks how the implanted stimulator is working, reviews the recorded data, and, if necessary, adjusts the device settings to the child's needs.
Regular ECG testing is very important because it ensures the safe and effective operation of the pacemaker in the long term, allows for early detection of changes, and maintains the health of the child's heart.
The procedure is completely painless and free of any radiation. The test is performed with a special external device that does not conduct current through the body, but “talks” to the stimulator in a non-contact manner to read the data. Children do not experience any discomfort during the procedure, and parents are allowed to be present to provide emotional support.
How is it done?
During the test, the child sits or lies in a comfortable position. A special programming device is placed on the skin above the stimulator, which communicates wirelessly with the ECG and displays the information on a computer for a doctor to read.
The doctor checks several parameters, such as:

heart rate records and regularity;

the frequency and effectiveness of the stimulator;

electrode contact and signal strength;
-
battery status and the stimulator's power reserve (i.e. how long the device will last).
If necessary, your doctor will adjust the stimulator settings, such as:

changes heart rate limits;

adjusts the stimulation mode to ensure optimal heart function and the child's well-being.
The entire procedure usually takes 15-30 minutes. It is completely painless and does not cause any sensations, and after it, the child can immediately continue with their daily activities – go to school, play or relax at home.
When is it needed?
Pacemaker testing/programming for children is performed both regularly and upon the doctor's order in special cases, such as:

for regular monitoring after pacemaker implantation;

if the child experiences dizziness, weakness, palpitations, fainting, or unusual sensations in the heart area;

if necessary, check the stimulator battery life;

after changing stimulator parameters or electrodes;

before other medical procedures, such as magnetic resonance imaging or surgery, if it is necessary to adjust the functioning of the ECG;

if the doctor wants to assess the stability of the heart rhythm or the effectiveness of treatment;

upon the advice of a doctor, as part of regular heart health monitoring.
Regular checks help make sure the device is working properly, and the child's heart rhythm is stable — this is a preventative but very important check for the child's safety.
How to prepare?
This procedure does not require any special preparation; however, a few tips will help everything go smoothly:

Take the pacemaker passport or documents issued after implantation with you – they contain important information about the device model and settings.

Give your child their medications as usual, unless your doctor has given you other instructions.

Choose comfortable clothing for your child that allows easy access to the stimulator site.

If other tests (such as an X-ray or MRI) are scheduled for the same day, be sure to inform the medical staff that your child has an implanted pacemaker.

Before the test, tell the doctor if your child has recently experienced weakness, dizziness, or palpitations - this will help them more accurately assess the device's performance.
